Behavioral Neuroscience: Learning to Suckle with Signature Odor
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new study in mice reveals that an apparently innate behavior, suckling, is triggered not by a classical pheromone but by the pup learning the complex signature odor of its mother.

Corticosterone influences on Mammalian neonatal sensitive-period learning.
Infant rats exhibit sensitive-period odor learning characterized by olfactory bulb neural changes and odor preference acquisitions critical for survival. This sensitive period is coincident with low endogenous corticosterone (CORT) levels and stress hyporesponsivity. The authors hypothesized that low corticosterone levels modulate sensitive-period learning. They assessed the effects of manipula...
متن کاملMuscarinic cholinergic neuromodulation reduces proactive interference between stored odor memories during associative learning in rats.
Previous electrophysiological studies and computational modeling suggest the hypothesis that cholinergic neuromodulation may reduce olfactory associative interference during learning (M. E. Hasselmo, B. P. Anderson, & J. M. Bower, 1992; M. E. Hasselmo & J. M. Bower, 1993). These results provide behavioral evidence supporting this hypothesis. A simultaneous discrimination task required learning ...
متن کاملThe effect of rat anterior cingulate inactivation on cognitive flexibility.
The present experiment investigated the effects of muscimol injections into the rat dorsal anterior cingulate on the acquisition and reversal learning of a 4-choice odor discrimination. Long-Evans rats were trained to dig in cups that contained distinct odors. In the odor discrimination, one odor cup contained a cereal reinforcement in acquisition whereas a different odor cup contained a cereal...
متن کاملRole of the amygdala complex in early olfactory associative learning.
Although olfactory associative conditioning in newborn rats produces marked structural and functional changes in the olfactory bulb, recent evidence suggests that extrabulbar circuits must be involved in storing these early memories. The present experiments examined the role of the amygdala complex on early olfactory learning. Bilateral amygdala lesions or sham lesions were performed on Postnat...
متن کاملAssociative conditioning tunes transient dynamics of early olfactory processing.
Odors evoke complex spatiotemporal responses in the insect antennal lobe (AL) and mammalian olfactory bulb. However, the behavioral relevance of spatiotemporal coding remains unclear. In the present work we combined behavioral analyses with calcium imaging of odor induced activity in the honeybee AL to evaluate the relevance of this temporal dimension in the olfactory code. We used a new way fo...
